VIA: Building Community Champions (BCC) with TJMC, Kampong Java NPC, and Ray of Hope

On the 30th of June 2024, SJI NPCC participated in a joint VIA initiative by Ray of Hope, as an effort to encourage youths of Singapore to gain more appreciation to our migrant worker community.

Together with Tampines Meridian Junior College (TJMC) and Kampong Java NPC, we have spent those meaningful hours interacting with some of our fellow migrant workers.

We have helped the more vulnerable community raise awareness on scams, and how to not fall prey to such scams. Presenting our ideas on how to stay vigilant and how to play our part certainly goes a long way in helping out the vulnerable communities in Singapore!

Through it all, one of our Year 3s had commented on this event:

"This was an extremely meaningful experience, in my opinion.

During the anti-scam workshop, we taught the migrant brothers various different ways to detect and avoid scams. They were extremely attentive, enthusiastic, and eager to learn more. Besides, I not only got to learn more about what the migrant brothers experience in their life both in Singapore and in their home country, but I also actually got to participate in hands on activities with them after the anti-scam workshop. This includes dodge ball, captains ball, and even an arts and crafts activity.

At first, they acted a little cold, and I was worried that this would severely impact the overall running of this activity. However, as the day went on and we participated in more activities together, the ice slowly broke and we got to know each other better. I learnt that they each had a very deep and interesting life, contrary to what I had assumed before.

I would definitely participate in such an activity again, as bonding with them and hearing their advice was an extremely enjoyable experience."

A reflection for you to think about:

What did you think was going happen during this event as first?

How did your thoughts change after this event?

In what ways was the event meaningful and significant to you?

How would you have done this different if you were given another opportunity?
